Up & Up on sale and on clearance; gift card deals

This week at Target, many Up & Up products are on sale or clearance. Up & Up is Target’s house brand, and I think they may be getting ready for a look upgrade. Dozens of their products were on clearance or on sale for tremendously good prices, so if you’re not a brand loyalist, this may be the time to pick up some Up & Up bleach (on clearance for $1.38) or Up & Up medicine and vitamins.

Protip: Don’t Always Strike While The Iron’s Hot

Just because something is on sale doesn’t mean that it’s the best deal you’re going to get.

One of the most important master couponing tricks is to not be duped into all store specials. Sometimes, I forget this while caught up in couponing and I kick myself after I see what I missed!

For example: Last week during the Can-Can Sale at ShopRite (it’s like Saturnalia for couponers!), Scott towels 6-pack and toilet paper 12-pack were on sale for $5.88. The customer receives a $2 checkout coupon off his or her next order when one toilet paper and one paper towel is purchased. Coupons released at the beginning of the year in Red Plum offered $1/1 of each, making the rolls $4.88, plus the $2 coupon off the next ShopRite trip.

This week, the same Scott products went down to $3.88! $3.88 is the rock-bottom price that paper towels and toilet paper hit. With my $1/1 coupons (which I only clipped 1 of, unfortunately), each would have been $2.88. There was no $2 reward, but it still turned out slightly cheaper.

The moral of the story? Don’t spring for a deal unless you calculated that it’s worth it in your personal shopping life. Last week’s deal may have been a good deal for someone who REALLY needed toilet paper or paper towels last week or someone who frequently purchases items that don’t have discounts or coupons. This week’s deal would have been amazing for someone who doesn’t need paper towels or toilet paper right away, but likes to pick them up when they hit rock-bottom.

Which sale would you choose? (If it’s the second one, make sure you get to ShopRite before Saturday to pick them up! Actually, head there now, because these items tend to fly off the shelves quick. If you miss your store’s stock, make sure you pick up a raincheck.)
